A hotel with a past
Saved from the wrecking ball
Two 1880s hotels were taken apart piece by piece and rebuilt side by side. A fitting home for a film about women who rebuilt what security looks like.

- 1886
The Grand Horton Hotel opens: an ornate Italianate Victorian built during San Diego's great land boom.
- 1887
The Brooklyn Hotel opens next door in a Cowboy-Victorian style, later home to the Kahle Saddlery, which made saddles for Tom Mix and Roy Rogers.
- 1891
President Benjamin Harrison and King Kalakaua of Hawaii pass through. Wyatt Earp spends seven years as a guest.
- 1970s
Both hotels are set for demolition. Preservationists fight back, and 82,000 bricks, bay windows, banisters and railings are saved.
- 1986
On the hundredth anniversary of both originals, the two buildings reopen side by side as the Horton Grand, joined by a courtyard and atrium.
- 2027
The Women In Security Documentary 2 is filmed here, March 2 to 5.
